Rafał Labijak is a Polish artist-painter born in 1968; he resides permanently in Poznań, but has
travelled extensively around the world. The time of his particular international activity was in
2015-2016, when in Ostrava (Czech Republic) he created on the site of the revitalised post-
industrial metallurgical and mining complex Vitkovice. He also paints in Berlin, which has
become a place of inspiration and creative development for him thanks to his contacts with
artists there.
Rafał Labijak is a graduate in painting from the Magdalena Abakanowicz University of Arts in
Poznań in the studio of Professor Wojciech Gorączniak (2021). In 2004-2005 he gained his
experience as a free student in the 8th Studio of Prof. Józef Walczak at the Poznań Academy of
Fine Arts. In 2014, he participated in the Plein-Air and Encounters of Art and Social Activities
organised by Prof. Janusz Marciniak (University of Arts in Poznań) and the Signum Foundation.
Independently, he graduated from the Poznań University of Technology in 1992. His fascination
with the observed interactions of energy on the forms and shapes of matter is evident in his
works to this day.
Rafal Labijak’s paintings oscillate around themes of communication in the postmodern world,
post-industrial landscapes, the mediatisation of virtual reality. His focus is also on social
relations in the age of the smartphone revolution. He uses traditional techniques such as oil and
acrylic on canvas or monotype, as well as experimenting with his own techniques. His works are
present in private and institutional collections in many countries.
